Summer Camp Week 5 Day 3

The sandwich du jour is turkey with cheese. The snack is juice and a dog biscuit...er...I mean, cookie. The damn thing tastes like a dog biscuit. Who makes these things, Alpo?

As we approach the half way point of the summer camp, most of our campers have been really good. A few in get trouble, but for the most part, they are good kids. There is one, however, that gets into trouble every day.

Therefore, a few members of the staff have come to the conclusion that most of our summer campers will go on to do well in life. And one will be featured on America's Most Wanted.

I can just imagine myself now, being older and balder, sitting in my easy chair with my cigar and beer, watching AMW. And John Walsh will be talking about someone who needs to be brought in for justice, and I will tell myself:

"Hey, I know that kid!"

Summer Camp Week 5 Day 2

Today the campers have a choice. The peanut butter and jelly pocket sandwich, or the cheese sandwich.

Makes you appreciate Subway even more, doesn't it?

 A Photo I Found

As I wrote about my adventures Friday evening, I mentioned a place I go to on occassion when I am out for the evening. The place is called Sportstown Billiards, and I listed its web site address on my blog for those who are curious to find out about the place. As I was checking its web site, I remembered that there was a photo gallery of customers.

Vicki took one photo of a customer while he was having a beer and a cigar. The guy looks familiar. Very familiar.

Anyone know who this guy is?

 Home Tonight Part 2

As I burned the midnight oil writing about my Friday night adventures, I became more tired and went to bed. I wanted to write more, but I really needed the sleep. And the horror movie was bad. The make up effects were just awful. At least the cleavage of the Elvira wannabe was good.

As for Friday, I decided to go out for a few beers after I completed my sushi mission. There is a place I go to called Sportstown Billiards on Robinson Street in the Colonialtown section of Orlando. The place has been there for decades. The current owners, Lee and Vicki, are two of the nicest people you would want to meet. The service is great, as well as the selection of beers. And all of it is served nice and cold. Nothing better after work on a hot summer day!

There are several billiard tables throughout, although on the weekend, there is usually a waiting list. Off to the main area is a room with darts and other games. I usually have a few beers at the bar, watch the game on the television, and talk sports with Lee. We both have solutions to the Orlando Magic's problems. Why the Magic's general manager has not call us for our advice is beyond me.

Sportstown Billiards has a website, www.sportstownbilliards.com. It has information about the establishment, including some interesting history.

After watching the White Sox play the Astros, I paid my tab, said good night and left. Not having been out on the town for awhile, I decided to stop at Lou's Lounge, which is around the corner on Bumby Avenue.

Lou's is a neighborhood lounge that has been there for decades as well. It has a full bar, whereas Sportstown only has beer, wine, and other bottled beverages. There are pool tables and televisions as well as one of those arcade games that has the crane you lower in an attempt to select a stuffed animal. Watching people trying to snag a teddy beer can be amusing, especially if they "almost have it".

There is a stage for bands, but no bands play there. A juke box provides the music. On stage, however, are life like figures of Elvis Presley and Jake from the Blues Brothers. Both are holding a microphone as they stand motionless and watch the patrons play eight ball on the nearest pool table. Why Elvis and Jake are there, I haven't a clue. And I never asked, either.

I do not go out to Sportstown or Lou's much anymore. And as I was there, I remembered how much the cigarette smoke bothered my eyes. I also remembered how sad it is to watch some people when they have been drinking. Or how funny people can be, such as the young lady in the mini skirt that was a little too mini.

Throughout the night, she would be pulling the skirt down, only for it to rise back up. I do not know what was funnier, her pulling on the skirt, or the number of men tilting their heads as they watched her.

"Uh, excuse me, but what good is tilting your head going to do?"

The smoke had got the best to me as I eyes were burning. I said good night to the bartender and left, opening the door to the fresh air that awaited.

The next time I go out, it will most likely be to watch a live band. I haven't seen any good live music lately, and I really enjoy listening to live music. Especially when you can get up and dance.
And it beats watching several guys tilting their heads in various positions as some short skirt comes by.

Maybe I will look for a good band after my next sushi mission.

And I'll take SpringMoon's advice when I see the name of the place.

If it's Stan's Sushi Shed, I'll just keep driving by.

 Home Tonight

Last night I had some shopping to do, so I went to Target to pick up a few things that I needed. After leaving, I decided to go out for the evening and check out a few places that I have not been to. A craving for sushi needed to be satisfied, so I went to a place called Pei Wei Asian Diner. It is located near the Target on Colonial Drive in Orlando. I went inside to take a look at the place and get a menu.

You know how it is when you go into a place you are not familiar with. You walk in, and you look around as if you have no idea as to where the hell you are at.

"Excuse me, but I am having a stupidity moment here. Come back to me in a minute."

I walked into the place, and looked for any signs as to whether a hostess would greet you. To the left of the door are giant reproductions of the menu posted on the wall. You don't need glasses to read this. I found a smaller menu to take, and gave it a glance. No sushi.

I will admit that even though I was disappointed that Pei Wei did not have a sushi bar, the restaurant looked very clean and comfortable. The lighting was low, giving the dining area a relaxing mood. And judging by the fare some of the customers dined on, the dishes looked appetizing. I will come back to sample the cuisine, but right now I am on a mission. And that mission is to find sushi.

My mission took me to a place called Bikkuri Sushi. It is located down the street as you go towards Little Saigon. It has been opened for a few months, and they specialize in take out, although there is a row of tables along the wall.

As you enter, there are pictures to the right of all the sushi dishes the Bikkuri chefs prepare. This way, you have an idea of what the hell you are eating. I ordered the spicy tuna roll and the fried seafood spring roll. Both items were fantastic, although it took a little while for me to remember how to operate chopsticks. It has been awhile since I used them.

A small dish on the side had ginger and wasabi, and another small, empty dish was for soy sauce. The wasabi had a good amount of heat, giving one the sensation that the back of their skull was ready to blow off. Now that is some great wasabi! The spring rolls were served with a soy sauce that was more dense in texture, similar to a paste.

The restaurant was clean and comfortable, well lit, and you could watch the sushi chefs prepare your dinner.

"Excuse me, but is that octopus?"

The service was great, and the staff was friendly. I guess I will be going back soon.

"I wonder what eel taste like?"

After I paid my bill and left, I went back to another place where the staff is friendly, the service is great, and the beer is cold.

I will tell you about that later. There is a low budget horror movie on called "Lady Frankenstein". I know this is so bad, it's going to be good. So I am staying in. Late night out last night, so it's home tonight. Besides, the Elvira wannabe is showing plenty of cleavage.
