Thoughts from a drinking buddy

 Election Results

Well, Hillary Clinton took Florida with 50% of the vote for the Democratic Primary. John McCain took the Republican Primary. And the mayor of our city, Orlando, will be mayor for four more years.

Well, two out of three isn't bad.

At least Amendment One passed. So that should save taxpayers some money on their property tax. Although real estate holders such as Walt Disney World will fare much better.

Have a good night, and I'll holler at you all soon.

A Cold Start To The Week

What a way to start off the week. I wake up this morning, and temperatures are in the 40s. While on my lunch break, I got on to the Orlando Sentinel web site, and the temperature was currently posted at 54 degrees. I know, some of you are probably thinking differently, but 54 degrees here is cold.

Tomorrow, the State of Florida is holding elections. I can just imagine the members of the media, as well as the politicians, bundled up and complaining about the weather.

I remember one time when I was working the parks on a weekend a cold front came through. I actually had a woman complaining to me about the cold weather and that they did not come down to Florida for cold weather.

"Well, madam, let me see what I can do about the weather. And while I am doing that, would you like a lottery ticket with tonight's winning numbers on it?"

Usually, temperatures are in the 70s during the winter. But some times you get these fronts that happen to come in from Canada. And all you can do is bundle up and make chicken soup.

I don't think the wait will be long for the Magic Kingdom's Splash Mountain either today or tomorrow.

Fortunately, there are no freeze warning for tomorrow, so this cold weather will not hurt the crops in any way. I do wish this cold front could move out the hot air that has formed over the state by all of these politicians making campaign speeches.

So here it is,shortly after I post this blog,I step outside to notice that it is much warmer than the 54 degrees posted on the Orlando Sentinel web site.

I look out at the outside thermometer, and the mercury reads 74 degrees.

So. Either it warmed up 20 degrees in a matter of five minutes, or someone at the Orlando Sentinel is not doing their job.

Or maybe it is the hot air from the politicians.

 It's Friday!

Is it just me, or does it seem like even though we had Monday off, it was a long week? What's up with that? On Tuesday and Wednesday I was walking around like one of those zombies from a George Romero movie. Damn,I felt tired! Yesterday, however, was a much better day. And a more productive one, as well.

And today is Friday! Anyone have any plans? Other than do some errands around town, I would not mind going to the cinema and see one of the films that have been nominated for best picture. Anybody see any of the movies that have been nominated?

The other day, raspberrytoast left a comment on my blog asking me what's up. My response was a needle in my arm. I had recently mentioned about going in for a check up, and I had to some some blood work done. So at 7:00 a.m., I had to go in to the doctor's office after fasting and have a nurse take some blood samples from me.Trust me, if you are not awake by then, that needle will wake you up!

Afterwards, the nurse walked me over to the bathroom and told me that I had to give them a urine sample. So as I walk in to the bathroom, there is a stack of clear plastic cups and a magic marker sitting atop the toilet tank. So I have to write my name on a cup, fill it with,.... um,....er,... and then I have to put the cup in this little cabinet where someone from the lab will take it for testing.

And even then there is a part of me that wanted to take the cup and put a different name on it. Something like "Serena Williams". That will fuck em' up. Why, I was even thinking of putting one of these emoticons on the cup. Could you imagine being a lab assistant retrieving a cup out of the cabinet and seeing on it?

Like I said, my blood pressure is good, and I will have to wait a week to find out the results of my blood work. One thing I do intend on doing this weekend is start an exercise program. And yesterday, I finally broke down while grocery shopping and bought the low fat salad dressing. And the fat free sour cream. I'm not crazy about it, but if I need to lose weight, I will have to make some changes in my diet.

I'm not eating any fucking rice cakes, though!

And if you have not read my last blog posting, it is about the movie Blade Runner. I went to see that at the cinema last week. Other than that, not much has been going on. It is a cold day here in Orlando, so that makes it a good day to go to the movies.

And since it is Friday, how about a Five for Friday list?

Here's my five favorite movies of all time:

1.) Citizen Kane

2.) Blade Runner

3.) The Godfather

4.) Gone With The Wind

5.) Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark

And if you're keeping score, two of those movies have Harrison Ford. Also one of my favorites. And I thought he was great in Witness.

To bad he has not done anything lately. But I will have to go see something else. There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men come to mind. And I am going to get a box of popcorn. No butter though, since I need to diet. And I'll get a Diet Coke to go with that, too.

Fuck the rice cakes!

Have a great weekend!

 Blade Runner

In Maitland, Florida, there is a movie house called the Enzian that features films not generally shown in the regular cinema. Foreign films, independent films, and re-releases of older films are the fare. Last Thursday, I went to the Enzian to see the final cut of Ridley Scott's 1982 science fiction film Blade Runner.

This is one of my all time favorites. And I never got a chance to see it on the big screen until now. When Blade Runner was originally released, it featured narration by the star of the film, Harrison Ford. Some years later, a director's cut was released on DVD without the narration. It also had a different ending.

The final cut is a twenty-fifth anniversary issue, which is the director's cut version with a few extra deleted scenes from the original.

If you are not familiar with Blade Runner, it is based on the Philip K. Dick novel "Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep". In the year 2019, six "replicants" have escaped from a colony from space and have returned to Los Angeles. Replicants are androids that are designed with human features and have a life span of four years. The androids are considered dangerous, and Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is called upon to "retire" the "skin jobs", as the replicants are referred to. Deckard is a "blade runner", who has the job of exterminating the replicants.

While Deckard goes to the Tyrell Corporation to get information on the Nexus 6 androids, he meets a replicant by the name of Rachel (Sean Young). While Deckard searches for the replicants, the leader of the replicants, Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) is trying to find a way to get into the Tyrell Corporation. Other replicants that have come to L.A. on Roy's mission is Pris (Daryl Hannah), Leon (Brian James), and Zhora (Joanna Cassidy).

As Deckard becomes more involved with Rachel, he starts to question why the replicants would come back to Earth.

Blade Runner is not the ordinary science fiction. It is not your grandfather's Buck Rodgers, or our Star Wars/Star Trek, for that matter. The film asks more questions than it does answering those questions, and the theme of the value of life runs throughout.

Like I said, this is one of my favorites. So you could imagine how excited I was to see it on the big screen. With great visual effects and a soundtrack by Vangelis, it also boasts a great cast along with M. Emmet Walsh, Edward James Olmos, and William Sanderson.

If you get a chance to see the final cut of Blade Runner on the big screen, do yourself a favor and go.
