Thoughts from a drinking buddy

 Truckstop Coffee

So here I am, driving down the interstate on Easter Sunday as the clouds roll over on this cold morning. As I am on my way to work, I am searching for music on the FM dial. I come across O-105.9FM, which plays new rock.

On Sunday morning, there is a show that features independent rock-and-roll bands. The dee-jay announces the next group called Truckstop Coffee, and proceeds to talk about having seen the band at The Social, a downtown Orlando night club that was formerly called The Sapphire.

The dee-jay says that the band is worth checking out, and then announces the title of the song she is about to play. And the name of the song?

Punch Me In The Face

Is it me, or do I feel like if I go to see this band play, I am going to have to do some slam dancing?

I think I'll pass.

Ian would be proud.

 Tag. You're It!

I have been tagged by Rosie to post five items that I have been told and have never forgotten. So here it goes.

1.) Dedication gets you nowhere.

This was told to me from a person who I had worked with. This person (who had a terrible drinking problem)had the least seniority over me and four fellow co-workers who applied for a management position, and he was the person selected for the position. Then he was put in a position to be my manager, and made work for me a living hell. Then when he finally came down with cancer from all the years of cigarette smoking, employees were asked to donate personal leave to him since he had used up any personal time he had.

I know it sounds rather callous, but he didn't get any of my time. And many other fellow employees felt the same way.

2.) I just want to be friends.

This is what she tells you after you help her move. Then when you need help with something, she is off with some guy at his friend's beach house. If the guy is good enough to sleep with you, he is good enough to help you move. If you don't have money, a boat, a beach house, or an expensive car, women are not going to give you the time of day.

And don't tell me otherwise.

3.)And if you want the type of relationship that Dad had with his brother, that's fine by me.

This is something one of my brother's said to me after he got drunk and beat me up. My father had some differences with a brother of his. When my father was a child, his brother left home, leaving my father to drop out of high school to help his mother out financially. They never spoke to each other.

My brother always had problems with Dad. So through, my brother's eyes, my father was always the bad guy. And my brother always had it in for me since I had a good relationship with my father. So he would go out of his way to make things miserable for the family. Especially for me and my father.

So when it came time to take care of Mom when she came down with Alzheimer's, my brother was nowhere around to help. So I told him that if he ever laid a hand on me again, I would throw his sorry ass in prison on assault charges. And I also told him that I would take him up on his offer. I haven't spoken to him in over ten years.

And don't even tell me about how life is short, how he should be forgiven, and blah blah, blah. I have nothing but hate and anger towards him.

Careful with what you wish for.

4.)"We released Bernie Kosar because of diminished skills."

This is one of my favorites. When Bill Belichick took over as coach for the Cleveland Browns, he had some differences with quarterback Bernie Kosar. Cleveland Browns fans were led to believe that since Belichick was this defensive genius, he would work on the defense and keep the offense the way it was. Instead, Coach Bellichick released several of the offensive player and never addressed the offensive line. This left Bernie Kosar with nothing to work with ,and eventually, Coach Belichick released Bernie Kosar. His reason was for doing this was that "Bernie Kosar had diminished skills".

So Bernie Kosar took his diminished skills to Dallas and played for Coach Jimmie Johnson, who was Kosar's college coach in Miami. With Troy Aikman hurt, Bernie Kosar played back up while Aikman recovered. The Cowboys eventually went on to win the Super Bowl, Bernie got his Super Bowl ring, and the Cleveland Browns struggled under Coach Belichick.

I don't care what anyone says about Coach Belichick, it still burns me up on what he did in Cleveland. And the same goes for Butch Davis.

5.)You have a lot going for you.

This is what a friend's wife told me before calling me a "drunken loser".

This is what keeps me going. Words like that. If I'm a drunk, then I guess I don't need to be going out with your husband when he calls and wants to go out for a few beers. I guess if I'm a drunk, then your husband who doesn't drink should not be giving me a call to go out to singles bars so he can cheat on you. And if I'm a drunk, then I guess you don't need to be calling me to go out drinking because your wife left you because of your drinking.

I had hoped that this was going to be fun, but it only brought out some things that have angered me. So I am just going to post the damn thing. I guess I am suppose to tag five other people, but I just don't feel like putting them through this.

 Corn Meal Griddle Cakes

Hey folks!

I took the day off from work so I could catch up on some rest and work on my taxes.

Anyway, if I have the time on a day off, I like to cook a big lumberjack breakfast. I know, we are all watching calories, fat grams, etc...

But I have this recipe from one of my mother's old cookbooks that I wanted to share. I love making this when I get the chance, and they are quite tasty. So have a great weekend, and I'll try to get back with you all sometime soon.

Corn Meal Griddle Cakes

1 cup flour
1 cup corn meal
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 or 2 eggs
2 cups milk

Mix the dry ingredients. Beat the egg well, add the milk, and combine the two mixtures. A tablespoon of molasses may be added to the batter. Bake on greased griddle. Serves six.

Or, one teaspoon baking soda and two cups of sour milk may be used in place of the baking powder and milk.

Recipe taken from The Old Settlement Cook Book, Simon and Schuster, New York

 Mountain Blueberry

So here I am, eating lunch while reading posts on Blogstream, and I am having a cup of yogurt. Mountain Blueberry is the flavor.

Can somebody please tell me what the hell the difference is between a mountain blueberry and a blueberry grown in a field?

Besides being grown at a higher altitude.
