Thoughts from a drinking buddy

 Job Perks

One of the things I like about my job are some of the perks I have. One of the perks I have is doing a job because someone else is too lazy to do something. Don't get me wrong, I HATE laziness. I will write about lazy co-workers some other time.

You see, I had to work a double shift last Thursday. I had to come in on a Thursday evening to strip and wax the floor of our Arts and Crafts room here at the neighborhood center. This is where our computer lab is located. In order to do my job the right way, I have to move all furniture and other fixtures out of the room so I can do my job properly. That means disconnecting all the computer equipment and putting it in storage until the newly waxed floor is dry.

Well, since I had to work a double shift on Thursday, I was off on Friday.

And do you think that anyone moved any furniture back on Friday and hooked up the computers for the children to use. Of course not!

Yesterday, I set up all the furniture and the computers, but I did not have time to install the computers. Our lazy employee, whom I will refer to as "dodo fuck", set up one of the computers so he could surf the web before work. How nice. Why he couldn't set up the other two computers is beyond me.

Well, long story short. Today, I have set up the computers, and I am in the middle of testing them out to see if everything is working properly. So if you are reading this, that means computer number 2 is working!

I love the chance of writing my blog and getting paid for it.

 Random Thoughts

A few random thoughts while there is a commercial break during "24".

Wasn't it nice to see The Police together on The Grammys playing the song Roxanne? There are plans for a reunion tour. I have never seen The Police in concert, although I have seen Sting a few times. And Sting always puts on a great show. There was really no one else I wanted to see, so I turned it off after the performance by The Police. I am glad to see the Dixie Chicks win five awards. The Dixie Chicks were recently on "Austin City Limits", and they were great. Check it out if you get the chance.

While the commercials are on, I am going through my mail only to find another application for a credit card. While opening the envelope and pulling out the letter/application, the little card with the word "attention" in big, red letters falls out to the floor. Like it always does. Who was the marketing genius who thought of this one so I can strangle that person?

A few years ago, some friends of mine bought me a George Foreman grill for Christmas. The lean, mean, grilling machine works great. Unfortunately, it leaves an odor of grease lingering in the kitchen. You remember that odor of pan fried hamburgers with pieces of onion and green pepper swimming in grease. Thank goodness for incense.

While I am writing this blog during commercial break, let me bring up the subject of DVD's. If you want to watch a good movie on DVD, "The Departed" comes out on DVD tomorrow. Another good movie that came out on DVD last week is "Flags Of Our Fathers". I saw both at the theater, and both are worth checking out.

Okay, so we have another commercial break. And I am going through my mail. And I have received two catalogs from Land's End. Not including the one I received last week. I'm wondering if Land's End did not do too well in sales over the Christmas season.

The second hour of "24" is about ready to start. I have a tape in the VCR to record "Heroes". Has anyone been keeping up on that?

That's it on the mail, with the exception of the Sports Illustrated and pizza coupons. I'll read about Peyton Manning later. Right now, Jack Bauer is coming on. On the show, Jack's brother admitted to the assassination of President Palmer, as well as the attack on CTU and the attempt on Jack's life. Then Jack's brother is killed by their father to cover up any illegal activity of his company.

And who's the brunette?

So let me get this straight. Your brother attempts to put a hit on you, then he is killed by the man who brought the two of you into this world?

And you thought your family was fucked up!

 Breaktime

Why is it that after you have been working all morning and decide to take a coffee break, you have some asshole bothering you because they need something?

And it also happens when you break for lunch.

 Done With 21

As I came in to work this morning, I remembered that today was an anniversary of sorts. I'm done with twenty-one years. Today, February 6, is my hire on date. And as of today, I will start my twenty-second year of service to the city.

Have you ever watched those political campaigns, only to hear the crowd in the convention hall shout "FOUR MORE YEARS!"? That is what is going through my head right now.

God, how I hope those four years move quickly.

 The Monday After

It is the Monday after the Super Bowl, and congratulations to the Indianapolis Colts for winning Super Bowl XLI. As much as I like both teams, I am glad to see coach Tony Dungy finally lead a team to win the Super Bowl. For years, I watched Tony Dungy coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into the playoffs, never making it to the Super Bowl. The owners of the Tampa Bay Bucs felt that a change was needed to be made and let Tony Dungy go. As Tampa Bay made a deal with Al Davis of the Oakland Raiders for coach Jon Gruden, Indianapolis made a deal with Tony Dungy to be the Colts head coach.

Coach Dungy then decided to leave the offense as is and concentrate on the defense. Now that hard work showed yesterday. If you have a strong defense, a productive offense, a smart quarterback, and reliable special teams, a winning season is most likely. In order to make that all work, however, is the coach and his staff. In order for the team to do well, you have to have the players buy into your system. And you have to have your team play together. This is what makes a team like the Colts a championship team. This goes for the Bears, the Patriots, and the other teams that made the playoffs.

And this is also the reason why you see some teams do poorly season after season. Maybe it is because the players have not bought into the system that the coach has installed. Maybe it is the general manager and the administration that is the problem with some teams. And then there are teams that have players who are malcontents. Players that do not give 100%. Or players that always seem to be in trouble with the law. Or players who blame everyone except themselves when losing occurs.

With all the football players that were arrested this year, and the coaches and general managers that do nothing about poor behavior, it is refreshing to see two coaches like Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith make it to the Super Bowl. Both are hard working, no nonsense coaches with a great work ethic and a devout religious following. They have instilled this into their players, and their players have bought into this. And both teams made it to the Super Bowl.

So thank you to Tony and Lovie for giving us a great season as well as a great game.

And I have a funny feeling that these two teams may just meet again in another Super Bowl.

And now the sad part. Since this is the Monday after the Super Bowl, that means no more football. Unless you want to consider the Pro Bowl next week.

I guess this means I will start reading the scouting reports and wait for the NFL Draft.
