Thoughts from a drinking buddy
Sunday May 4, 2008
I'm tired and I want to go to bed. Had a drink about an hour to go, and it's gone straight to my head. Oh, to sing like Greg Lake. The NASCAR race from Richmond is over, as well as a repeat of Saturday Night Live. So there is not much on, and it has been a long day. Time for me to retire for the evening, as it turns into early morning. As I sit at home getting ready for bed, I think about the days when I would still be out at this time, and last call would soon be served. And someone would be singing about being wasted away again in Margaritaville. Looking for that lost shaker of salt. As for me, I would think about that song from the Emerson, Lake, and Palmer CD that sits in my collection. I am home, though, and no other place I would rather be. So good night, everybody. Sleep well, and may you have a wonderful Sunday. I will post something soon. When I have something to write about. Which I do, but it is late. And the Sandman has just arrived. And if anybody wants to stop by for coffee in the morning, I'll have the coffee brewing. As I always do. Cream and sugar? | | Posted by Big Al at 1:20 AM -

So I was wrong. The Kansas City Chiefs did not make a draft day deal with the St. Louis Rams. I had a hunch that the Atlanta Falcons would select Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan with the third selection of the first round in the NFL Draft that was held this past weekend. But I had a stronger hunch that the Chiefs would trade up to get Ryan before Atlanta could pick. Didn't happen. The Chiefs, however, get defensive tackle Glen Dorsey from LSU. Which is a great move for the Chiefs. In case you are wondering, the Rams stayed at the number two spot and selected Chris Long, the defensive end from Virginia. At the fourth selection in the first round, the Oakland Raiders picked running back Darren McFadden from Arkansas. Which teams in my opinion had a great draft? I like the Miami Dolphins draft, along with Kansas City, St. Louis, the New Orleans Saints, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Buffalo Bills. The Arizona Cardinals also had a good draft, as well as the Houston Texans. Two other teams that traded out of the first round, the Washington Redskins and the Green Bay Packers, had good drafts as well. The Pittsburgh Steelers had a good draft, and the Indianapolis Colts concentrated on the offensive line throughout their draft. You can have the best quarterback in the game. But he can not do a thing if he has no protection. The New York Giants helped their secondary in the first day of the draft, which needed upgrading. The New York Jets picked Vernon Gholston, the defensive end from Ohio State with the sixth selection in the first round. Then they traded up into the end of the first round and got the best tight end available, Dustin Keller, from Purdue. There are other teams that I feel made some good picks. And then there are teams that left me scratching my head, thinking WTF? I did not like the Tampa Bay Bucs draft. I like the Carolina Panthers draft, but I am wondering if they gave up too much in draft day trades. And how come they did not pick up a quarterback? And that goes for Kansas City as well. As for quarterbacks, I am wondering if Joe Flacco from Delaware was worth a first round pick. Flacco was picked by the Baltimore Ravens. All I can say is, let's wait and see. He may be the answer to the Ravens quarterback problem. Speaking of quarterback problems, the Chicago Bears did not address that area. I really don't think Rex Grossman is the answer. How about my team, the Cleveland Browns? They did not have a pick until the fourth round, and they moved up to get Beau Bell, an inside linebacker from UNLV. He should be able to help the run defense. They had four more selections, which they used for back ups. They were not able to address the area of cornerback, nor did they get a running back. Those are two areas of concern for me. But we do have two quarterbacks that are both capable of starting for any team in this league. And a offensive line that gives them great protection. Which is fine by me. | | Posted by Big Al at 11:04 AM -

If you are a big fan of the NFL, like me, then you are probably anxious for the NFL Draft to start tomorrow. And if you follow the latest lines regarding the draft, you are well aware by now that the Miami Dolphins have the Number One in the draft. Earlier this week, the Dolphins signed Jake Long, a offensive tackle from Michigan, to a five year deal. This makes him the top overall selection in this year's draft. As the NFL commissioner would say, "The Saint Louis Rams are on the clock." The Rams have the second selection in the 2008 NFL Draft, and after Miami signed their draft choice, the NFL told the Rams that they must wait until Saturday before they begin. From reading several mock drafts in different publications, the consensus is that the Rams are most likely to go defense and are interested in Chris Long, a defensive end from Virginia, Glenn Dorsey, a defensive tackle from LSU, and Vernon Gholston, a defensive end from Ohio State. Now here is where it gets interesting. The Atlanta Falcons have the third selection in the first round. The Kansas City Chiefs have the fifth selection in the first round. Both teams are in need of a quarterback and a offensive tackle. Atlanta has six picks in the first three rounds. Along with their first round pick, they have three selections in the second round, and two selections in the third round. The Kansas City Chiefs recently made a trade with the Minnesota Vikings, giving them defensive end Jared Allen for the Vikings' first round pick, which is the seventeenth pick in the first round, along with two selections in the third round. This gives the Chiefs six selections in the first three rounds. Are you with me so far? Now, many sports writers feel that the Atlanta Falcons will select the quarterback from Boston College, Matt Ryan, with their first round selection. As I mentioned before, the St. Louis Rams have the second pick. And it seems like they have other players in mind. As for Kansas City, they have not had a franchise quarterback in ages. And over the years, the Chiefs have obtained quarterbacks either through trades or free agency. And with Atlanta selecting in the third spot, could they take Matt Ryan? Even though the Saint Louis Rams have stated that they are staying with the second pick, I have a hunch that the Kansas City Chiefs are going to make an offer to the Rams in an attempt to trade up from the fifth spot into the second spot and draft Matt Ryan before Atlanta can make their selection. Like I said, it is just a hunch. But if the Rams do make the trade, they will still be making a selection in the top five picks of the draft. And one of the three players I mentioned above that the Rams are interested in will still be available. Also, this gives St. Louis some additional draft choices. Stay tuned. Because there may be some suspense to this NFL draft yet. | | Posted by Big Al at 11:16 AM -

"Please make a fist.", the nurse told me as she prepared the needle. I have not had coffee yet. I cannot eat until the blood has been drawn for testing. And on top of it all, I am getting poked with a needle. All before 7:30 a.m. What a way to start the day. At the start of the new year, I had a physical. The first one I have have since I turned forty. After the first physical, I was told to lose weight, watch the sugar and cholesterol, and make plans on getting a colonoscopy. So for the last few months, I have given up bread. I have cut down on the amount of pasta and rice I eat. I no longer buy soda. Not even diet soda. I quit eating ice cream for dessert after dinner. And on top of that, I have done the unthinkable. I am cutting out the beer. Oh, the horror! With a full-time job and a part-time job on the weekends, it is sometimes hard to find the time to exercise. When I get a chance, I will go for a walk along the lake after work. This way, I have gotten my exercise out of the way before I go home. Last week, I had the colonoscopy. The results were good, so nothing to worry about there. "Come back in five years.", said the doctor. "And eat more bran cereal!" "Yes sir!" I wonder if they make bran ice cream? Anyway, I'll tell you more about preparing for the colonoscopy some other time. But for now, I will have to wait a week to find out how the sugar levels and my cholesterol is. At least I have lost twelve pounds. That's the good news. And I have not heard the dreaded "C" word, so that is even better. So as I wait for the results, I will continue to diet and exercise. And don't worry, raspberrytoast, I will not be ogling any women while I walk around the park. But I think a little celebration is in order, so I may help myself to a bowl of ice cream after dinner tonight. I will walk if off tomorrow. Besides, it is low fat ice cream. As for the bran cereal? It can wait until I am finished with my box of corn flakes. | | Posted by Big Al at 10:51 AM -

I was just thinking about some of the blogs that I have read over the last few years on Blogstream. And there are a few blogs that I miss. Either because the people who write the blogs have become too busy, or because they have deactivated their blog for a reason. I was on a blog just recently, and under the column heading for "Blogs I Like", I saw the title "Uninspired Thoughts". In case you are new to Blogstream and are unfamiliar with the blog, it was written by a person that went by the moniker of Donuts Are My Life. Usually, the subject matter was adult oriented. And sometimes it could be downright gross. But there were many times that you just had to laugh while reading the adventures of the author. I clicked on the title in hopes of being about to send a PM to Donuts just to say hello and that I was just thinking about her. Her blog, however, has been deactivated. So if there is a chance that you may be reading this, Donuts, I just wanted to say hello. And I hope that everything is fine in your life. Drop by when you get a chance.
