So I was wrong.
The Kansas City Chiefs did not make a draft day deal with the St. Louis Rams. I had a hunch that the Atlanta Falcons would select Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan with the third selection of the first round in the NFL Draft that was held this past weekend. But I had a stronger hunch that the Chiefs would trade up to get Ryan before Atlanta could pick. Didn't happen.
The Chiefs, however, get defensive tackle Glen Dorsey from LSU. Which is a great move for the Chiefs. In case you are wondering, the Rams stayed at the number two spot and selected Chris Long, the defensive end from Virginia. At the fourth selection in the first round, the Oakland Raiders picked running back Darren McFadden from Arkansas.
Which teams in my opinion had a great draft? I like the Miami Dolphins draft, along with Kansas City, St. Louis, the New Orleans Saints, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Buffalo Bills. The Arizona Cardinals also had a good draft, as well as the Houston Texans. Two other teams that traded out of the first round, the Washington Redskins and the Green Bay Packers, had good drafts as well.
The Pittsburgh Steelers had a good draft, and the Indianapolis Colts concentrated on the offensive line throughout their draft. You can have the best quarterback in the game. But he can not do a thing if he has no protection.
The New York Giants helped their secondary in the first day of the draft, which needed upgrading. The New York Jets picked Vernon Gholston, the defensive end from Ohio State with the sixth selection in the first round. Then they traded up into the end of the first round and got the best tight end available, Dustin Keller, from Purdue.
There are other teams that I feel made some good picks. And then there are teams that left me scratching my head, thinking WTF? I did not like the Tampa Bay Bucs draft. I like the Carolina Panthers draft, but I am wondering if they gave up too much in draft day trades. And how come they did not pick up a quarterback?

And that goes for Kansas City as well.
As for quarterbacks, I am wondering if Joe Flacco from Delaware was worth a first round pick. Flacco was picked by the Baltimore Ravens. All I can say is, let's wait and see. He may be the answer to the Ravens quarterback problem. Speaking of quarterback problems, the Chicago Bears did not address that area. I really don't think Rex Grossman is the answer.
How about my team, the Cleveland Browns? They did not have a pick until the fourth round, and they moved up to get Beau Bell, an inside linebacker from UNLV. He should be able to help the run defense. They had four more selections, which they used for back ups. They were not able to address the area of cornerback, nor did they get a running back. Those are two areas of concern for me.
But we do have two quarterbacks that are both capable of starting for any team in this league. And a offensive line that gives them great protection. Which is fine by me.
Oh and I know who Peyton Manning is!
Take Care!
I have been wondering about the offensive line for awhile, they don't block real well for the run. But then sometimes I wonder if Alexander time has come to go. Only time will tell and with my schedule this year, time may be here sooner than they think.
Living near UT, I would imagine that you know Peyton Manning. Don't they have a street named after him on campus?
As for BF being a Giants fan, his team had a good draft. The Giants went after players in areas that needed to be addressed.
Have a great day!
I LOVE FOOTBALL!
I played in high school, but I had no desire to play college football. I have also been a fan of the Cleveland Browns all of my life, so I follow the team during the off season as well, with all the moves in free agency and the draft.
Growing up in the midwest (Ohio), football is practically a way of life. As it is in the south and southwestern states.
The Seahawks released Shaun Alexander just recently. During the free agency period, they signed Julius Jones, the former Dallas Cowboys running back. They also signed another running back, but I cannot remember who it was.
I am sad to Alexander go, but with on offensive line that doesn't block well for runners
he has had to take some hard hits. Seattle has gotten somewhat better in catching the ball.
The weather has been getting hotter in Orlando. Temperatures have been in the mid 80s for the past few weeks, and temperatures will soon get above 90. Unfortunately, we have had no rain for awhile, which is making conditions dry. That makes for a higher risk of wild fires.
How is the weather where you are at? I hope everything is going great for you, and I will try to stop by your blog soon. Have a great weekend!
I always have coffee brewing just for you.
We are starting from the ground up, Red Skin fan, and it is going to be an interesting season to say the least.
I really like what the Redskins did in the draft. They traded down into the second round, getting two second round picks from Atlanta. With those picks, they get wide receiver Devin Thomas from Michigan State, and tight end Fred Davis from USC. He is one of the better tight ends coming out of college this year. And with the third selection in the second round, they get Malcolm Kelly, the wide receiver from Oklahoma. These guys will help the offense, especially Jason Campbell.
I remember when coach Jim Zorn played quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks. He played in a passing offense, often throwing to wide receiver Steve Largent. If he installs an offense like what he had in Seattle, expect to see a lot of passing. These players I previously mentioned will help move the chains.
Although the Redskins selected three defensive backs in the draft, they did not address the defensive line until the seventh round. I would had considered trying to draft at least another defensive lineman in the second day of the draft, instead of a punter. They did, however, pick up Colt Brennan, the quarterback from Hawaii. He should make a good backup for Campbell.
