Thoughts from a drinking buddy

 Revisiting My Youth
Back to Full Blog

I decided to stay in tonight after I got off from work at the theme park. While I watched the news, I got on to the computer and looked up the television listings for tonight. So what is on Saturday Night Live?

In honor of George Carlin, who passed away earlier this week, NBC aired the first episode of Saturday Night Live, which was hosted by George Carlin. Musical guests were Billy Preston and Janus Ian.

Talk about a blast from the past! I remember watching this when it aired, and I remember watching Saturday Night Live during my years of high school. The NBC affiliate for Cleveland was WKYC. And after Saturday Night Live aired, Second City TV would come on. And I remember laughing my ass off the whole time.

The years have passed, and George Carlin passed away. Andy Kaufman, who made his first appearance on this program that Carlin hosted, also passed away. John Belushi and Gilda Radner left us as well. And Second City's John Candy, I miss the most.

I enjoyed watching this again as George Carlin talked about the differences between football and baseball. Too bad that he could not do his "Seven Words You Cannot Say On Television" routine on the program. That would have been classic.

I will miss George Carlin, since he was a part of my life growing up in Cleveland during the 70's. We would listen to his comedy albums, along with Cheech and Chong and Richard Pryor, and we would laugh our asses off. Are there any comedians out there today that are as good as these guys? I think not.

And I miss Rodney Dangerfield. And even though he said that he didn't get any respect, he sure had mine.

So now George has left, and more of the people that were in my youth go away. The people that made me laugh during those tough times of growing up. And I sure can use some good laughs now. Where's the old Second City when I need them. Especially Count Floyd?

So George, thanks for the laughs, and you will be missed. And it was nice to see you one more time.

Now if you excuse me, I am going to find those "seven words" on CD and put it in my collection.

I can use the laughs.

Hi Big Al, there must be a place in heaven that is in need of some laughs, God always takes the good one's first, it seems.

Have a lovely sunday.

The news magazine called "The Week" labeled Carlin "subversive" a most erroneous and insipid slander. Carlin made us think, he tried to wake us up. Some of us woke, and many didn't. For our sleepy ignorance we now are paying the price with a rogue govt and all the death and hate it has for others, especially it's own people.
Carlin tried to wake us up and for it the media patronizes and labels him thereby labeling anyone we remotely understood or liked him.
Bless his heart and soul.
I know Johnny La Rue would have something to say!

what a great read, Big Al! I too loved Saturday Night Live and George, and like so many have been taken from us and missed. There are no real comedians are there?

Have a great Sunday afternoon.

I'll miss George Carlin. He was not only funny but he made us think.

n.lynn,

With all the comedians that have passed away over the years, Heaven must have one great comedy club.

capananda,

George Carlin and Gallagher were two of my favorite comedians who would make you think about what they talked about.

Bella,

I still wonder what John Belushi's career would have been like if he had not died of an overdose. As for George Carlin, his routine about the difference between football and baseball is one of my favorites.

And even though it is not the greatest movies made, "Summer Rental" with John Candy is still one of my favorite comedies.

Miss Lou,

Although George Carlin was funny, there was a lot of truth to what he talked about.

Maybe in heaven, they are now on the other side of the stage, in the audience, laughing at us!

I think my earliest acquaintance with George Carlin came courtesy of his Hippie Dippy Weatherman on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. What a blast that show was.

We don't have any of Carlin's caliber, that's for sure. He will be missed.

Thanks for the video. And I promise not to use any of these words around the children at summer camp.

lonewolf,

I would love to see if that is available on DVD. I was in elementary school when The Smothers Brothers Show was on, but I remember how funny they were.

He was one of the best! And it's like some of the comments said, he made us think while we were laughing. And maybe he changed a mind or two. Rest in Peace George.

All those great people who are no longer with us that you mentioned, Big Al, shaped many of us in ways unimagined. George Carlin seemed to get better with time. Few can match John Belushi's or Chris Farley's manic and insanely funny physical comedy. I always dug Martin Mull too and he's still kicking. I still laugh when I think of Mull's song about Miami - "Am I in Heaven or am I in Miami?" Having lived in Miami for 2 years in the early 80's, I will submit that the question is not difficult to answer at all, from May to September it was hotter than Hell.

I think Dave Chappelle has that spirit in him. Maybe Chris Rock too. But can they carry over time like Carlin did? I think they could but we'll see. Adam Sandler has his moments, but he's not quite at the same level. David Spade? Nope. John Stewart? Maybe.

Good post, a nice trip down memory lane. Peace!
